Are you experiencing the following:

  • swelling
  • heat around the painful area
  • pain with movement
  • stiffness
  • redness of the affected area

If you are experiencing these symptoms, you could be suffering from bursitis.

Bursitis is inflammation of a bursae. A bursae is a sac of fluid that sits between a tendon and bone to reduce friction of the tendon and assist in joint movement.

Some of the common causes are:

  • Overuse or repetitive movements of the joint
  • Sports
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Gout
  • Diabetes
  • Trauma

Treatment options include:

  • soft tissues release of the surrounding muscles
  • mobilisation of the direction and surrounding joints
  • Traction
  • Dry needling
  • Cupping
  • Taping

Your osteopath might also recommend rehabilitation exercises; foam rolling, spikey ball, stretching to complement the benefits of treatment. There are modifications that can be made to posture, sleeping positions and sitting/standing to reduce minor irritants throughout the day/night which can make a significant difference.
